Introductory course in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM)

    Webinar

    Wednesday 13 November @ 4pm GMT

Find out more about our unique to the UK IONM course aimed at supporting colleagues in the NHS to upskill their staff, enabling them to deliver a high quality, in-house service with the potential to save their organisation up to £100k annually.

    The problem

The skills required to perform intra operative neuromonitoring are highly specialised with those trained in short supply forcing many NHS organisations to outsource external IONM services at significant cost.

There are currently no professional requirements for individuals delivering IONM services, which obliges organisations to rely on in-house training and competency based assessment that can vary in scope and quality.

    The solution

Through a joint collaboration, the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals and US-based education and training specialists at the Center for Electroneurodiagnostics (CEN) have developed an innovative 6 to 9 month training programme to address this skills gap. By harnessing a hybrid approach, delegates learn all the requisite skills and knowledge they need to deliver IONM for spinal deformity:

    · Seven weeks of online didactic teaching led by CEN covering a wide and diverse range of intraoperative neuromonitoring topics concluding with a formal assessment - all delivered by highly experienced US based neuromonitoring professionals

    · Simulation training in state of the art training facilities at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, followed by two weeks of real-time, hands-on experience in hi-spec spinal orthopaedic operating theatres involving four to six spinal deformity cases led by Newcastle's IONM experts

    · Mentorship period over a number of months during which time delegates are required to complete around 50 supervised cases in their local NHS Trust including monthly sessions scheduled with a mentor to review progress and conduct workplace assessments.

On successful completion we award the “Certificate of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (focus on spinal deformity).”

November is fast approaching and we are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Annual Scientific Meeting in Birmingham!

This year’s programme will have several interactive elements, with simulation stations and roundtable discussions. The goal of these sessions is to promote the sharing of knowledge between delegates and to facilitate networking. Our varied programme also has presentations on the latest intraoperative monitoring research going on in the UK, insights into the patient’s perspective on their surgical journey, updates about training opportunities in intraoperative monitoring and more.

You can register for the meeting here: https://bss2024.eventreference.com/register, and you can find the most up to date programme for the conference here: https://bss2024.co.uk/additional-meetings/bsin/

We have also created a new session this year aiming to give intraoperative monitoring practitioners who are early in their career an opportunity to present a short case study. We plan to allocate 10 minutes for each presentation, with some time afterwards for questions. This is a great opportunity to get experience of presenting at a conference on your CV and to share a case of interest with the wider intraoperative monitoring community! If you are interested, please email contact@bsin.org.uk.

We would also welcome expressions of interest from any more experienced IOM practitioners regarding presenting at conference, either for this year or at future meetings – if you have some research or developments in intraoperative monitoring that you would like to share, please get in contact via contact@bsin.org.uk and let us know!

Hope to see you in Birmingham,

    Adam Hart

Our colleagues in Belfast urgently require assistance with some Clinical Physiologist training. They have one practitioner who needs refresher training in Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) after a 14-month gap since their last procedure.
If you have expertise in Clinical Physiologist training or access to relevant resources, your support would be invaluable. Please reach out to Kyle Ashfield kyle.ashfield@belfasttrust.hscni.net if you can offer guidance, shadowing, or facilitate connections with training programs.
Your prompt response would greatly benefit our colleagues and their patients. Thank you for your support and commitment to excellence in healthcare.

    Best regards,
    BSIN Committee

Current practice of IONM for AIS surgery across the UK

    A message from the researchers:

    Hello!

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete the questionnaire which was sent out at the end of last year. This questionnaire aims to assess the current practice of Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) surgery across the UK, and more specifically the nuances of how TcMEPs are performed. This will build a national picture of IONM practice and will be the foundations on which to undertake future work.

We know not everyone received the invite to participate previously, so would like to provide another opportunity to fill out the questionnaire. Relatively few centres provided responses last year, so to make it more convenient to complete the questionnaire is now split into a shorter required section, and an optional additional details section.

If you haven’t already completed the questionnaire and would like to contribute towards understanding national practice, please follow this link or use the QR code to take part.

The questionnaire will remain open until the 10th of May 2024, and the results will be shared via the BSIN.

Thanks once again, and we look forward to reading your responses, kind regards,

    Joshua Wiggett and Michael Pridgeon
